Wolves pay up £48,000 for Jimmy Melia

Monday, March 9 – 1964
Wolves boss Stan Cullis splashed a club record £48,000 to buy Jimmy Melia, Liverpool’s England inside forward, last night.
The Melia deal – Cullis’s second big signing in seventy two hours – boosts Wolves spending this season to £140,000.

Cullis bidding to buy Wolves back into the lush fields of European Soccer paid £40,000 for centre forward Ray Crawford, £15,000 for winger Pat Buckley and last Friday – £37,000 for Swindon wing half Bobby Woodruff.
His other big deal this season was a swap – Alan Hinto for Nottingham Forest left winger Dick Le Flem.
Cullis stands to recoup £30,000 when Forest make their expected bid this week for Wolves inside man Chris Crowe.
With Melia’s arrival, Crowe is booked for a back seat at Molineux.
Forest will figure in another big deal today. Arsenal wing half or inside forward Johnny Barnwell decided yesterday to join Forest. The fee: £30,000. Barnwell will sign after driving to Nottingham this morning.

Wolves had been interested in Melia for some time. Earlier in the season they had an offer turned down because the Anfield club were going flat out for the League and Cup double. But last week Liverpool boss Bill Shankly told Cullis Melia was now available.
The two manager settled the fee in a telephone conversation on Sunday, and yesterday Melia and his wife Joan travelled to Wolverhampton.

After signing, Melia said: “I think the move will do me good, and my wife is happy to come south. “
Melia, capped for England against Scotland at Wembley last season, has scored only four goals this season.

He lost his first-team place through injury at Christmas. He was out for five matches, came back for three, but has been out of the side since he was dropped for the Arsenal Cup-tie six games ago.
Recently he has been barracked by the Anfield crowd – a factor in his decision to jump at the chance of joining Wolves.
John Galley, Wolves’ 20-year-old reserve centre forward has asked for a transfer.
