A man named Wm. E. Morton Barclay (60), of Upper Beau-street, Liverpool, was found dead in his house this afternoon.
The arteries in one of his arms had been severed, and he was lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He had been ill for a day or two.

Such a shame and lonely way to go for such an important man in the history of merseyside football
Hi David,
Yes, a very sad ending. I have seen some notes about a collection for Barclay from around 1901. I assume something happened to him in this regard. I know there are bits about this in the Everton collection, and I have also seen it minutes from Lancashire FA. But I have no idea the reason for the collection.
Also worth noticing is that going through all the people present at John Houlding’s funeral in 1902 (all the people mentioned in the papers) – there was not mentioning of Barclay being present.
Something bad seems to have happened to him.
